Former Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Shanti Mandrekar, accompanied by a group of women, staged a protest march to the Electricity Department office in Vasco on Thursday, demanding relief from the continuous rise in electricity bills.
Addressing the gathering, Mandrekar questioned the government’s decision to repeatedly increase electricity tariffs and impose penalties, stating that the growing financial burden was becoming unbearable for poor and middle-class families.

She also criticised the functioning of the Electricity Department, alleging that consumers seeking redressal of their grievances are made to move from one office floor to another without receiving any meaningful assistance.
Mandrekar warned that if the issue is not resolved and consumers are not provided immediate relief, a large-scale protest would be organised outside the residence of Power Minister Sudin Dhavalikar.
She urged the government to take prompt measures to address the concerns of electricity consumers and curb the rising cost of power, which she said was placing severe strain on household budgets.
