Shantinagar locals clear garbage as port town’s waste piles up

VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council areas have once again fallen in the clutches of garbage with several dark spots appearing in the town.

Since the council was dissolved, the garbage collection exercise has also gone for a toss with citizens in the municipal area resorting to dumping uncollected garbage by the roadsides.

The locals from Shantinagar area had put forth this garbage issue several times before the concerned authorities pointing out that the persons dump garbage by the roadsides and let it rot and emanate foul smell. However, after getting fed up of knocking all the doors, the Shantinagar locals recently decided to take a step ahead and have started cleaning the heaps of garbage from their area with their own hard earned money. They have deployed a crane, labourers and the required tools, etc, to get rid of the waste. Further, the youth from Shantinagar have also installed two CCTV cameras and a board with a warning message forbidding people from dumping waste.

It is like an irony since the Urban Development Minister Milind Naik resides in the area and the garbage is piling up in every ward of the town.

“Do we have to wait for the municipal elections and the councillors to be elected for the garbage to disappear?” asked a resident of Vasco who did not want his name to be disclosed.

A social activist from Vasco, Preetam Queloscar, also appreciated the work done by the youth from Shantinagar and has said that MMC should have taken this issue seriously of keeping the town clean.

Nikhil, another Vasco resident, said that the MMC must continue to keep its area clean by doing regular garbage collection.  “Strict penalties with heavy fines should be imposed on the person who dumps waste in the open, to deter them from littering the roadsides with garbage,” said Nikhil.

Efforts made to contact Administrator of Mormugao Municipal Council to know about the steps taken to curb garbage menace were in vain as he was unavailable for comments.
