PORVORIM: When a 15-km underground cable has as many as 35 joints and is linked to a substation plagued by frequent shutdowns, the result can only be frequent power outages to residents of Porvorim.
Mindful that erratic power supply has caused considerable hardship to residents of Porvorim, the Electricity department has now decided to undertake a major power shutdown on July 10 from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm and, if needed, another shutdown at a later date, to rectify all problems.
Residents of Porvorim have been irked over frequent power fluctuations and complained that many of their electrical appliances were damaged in the process.
When contacted, an official of the Electricity department mentioned that some joints of the underground cabling had developed faults.
“Power transmission through the underground cable commenced from February this year. The length of the underground cable from Tivim to Porvorim is around 15 kms and there are around 35 joints on this route. Some joints have developed faults and the company has identified the faulty joints, but is unable to rectify them due to rains. The government has directed the company to replace all 35 joints to avoid further problems,” said the official.
The official added that the power supply which comes to Porvorim through overhead wires from Tivim via Nachinola gets interrupted due to frequent shutdowns undertaken by the Nachinola substation to attend to various breakdowns.
“The Electricity department has directed the Nachinola power substation to undertake shutdown on July 10 from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm and rectify all their problems. If the problems persist, they have been advised to take one more shutdown so that the power problems are resolved once and for all. the Chief Minister is aware of erratic power supply faced by residents of Porvorim and surrounding areas,” said the official.
