PANJIM: After introduction of the single window system for organising tourist events last November, the government revenue have doubled with nearly 85 events organised all over the state drawing in upto Rs 40 crore per annum.
While most of these major events were organised during peak season ~December 2012-January 2013 ~ one fact that has come to fore is the increasing popularity of Goa’s coastline for beach weddings and ceremonies.
Data shows that more than 70 per cent applications that have been cleared by the department level committee for events in the State have been applications for wedding ceremonies and wedding functions on the sandy shores of Goa which provide a mesmerizing backdrop.
A written reply to the Goa Assembly furnished last week by the tourism ministry also indicates that the beach belt in South Goa is getting popular for beach weddings with nearly 80 per cent applications for events in Salcete taluka comprising applications for beach weddings.
Since December 2012 there have been four events cleared by the committee for events in Pernem, a total of 16 events approved for Bardez taluka, nine in Tiswadi taluka, five in Mormugao taluka , 30 in Salcette taluka and 20 in Canacona taluka.
Sources say that as much as Rs 30 crore to Rs 40 crore could be generated by the tourism ministry for such events in one year alone.
The tourism minister Dilip Parulekar told the House that tourism related events ranging from beach events, musical shows, exhibitions, night bazaars, and festivals are being organised in the State after seeking approvals of the committees ~the State level permissions committee and tourism department permission committee.
