PANJIM: The Congress, on the second consecutive day, hit out at the government for the recently imposed entry tax on non-Goa registered vehicles entering the state with Congress MP Francisco Sardinha on Saturday, urging the government to roll back the entry tax.
Sardinha argued that this imposition could prove detrimental for the tourism industry. Friday, Valpoi MLA Vishwajit Rane wanted the entry tax rolled back because the common person would be affected.
However, according to Sardinha, the Congress party has not yet taken any stand on the issue. According to the veteran Congress politician the government is already collecting tax from tourists and in case it needs to do more, then there were other sources like VAT etc.
He also said that such a (entry) tax does not exist anywhere in the country.
The state government began charging entry tax on vehicles entering the state from April 15 from which it expects to collect Rs 100 crore annually.
Sardinha, also spoke on Special status, welcoming the resolution taken by the Goa Assembly recently and promised to follow it up with the Centre when the proposal reaches the Centre.
