The first truck carrying relief material for flood-affected people in Assam was blessed by Auxiliary Bishop Simiao Fernandes and flagged off by former bureaucrat Elvis Gomes at Bishop’s Palace, Altinho, in the presence of retired IPS officers Bosco George and John Shilshi and Street Providence man aging trustees. The truck, loaded with materials collected from donors, is expected to reach Assam within the next few days. The trustees thanked donors and members of the public for their material and financial contributions.
Blessing the truck, Bishop Simiao Fernandes praised the initiative and said the suffering of fellow human beings was felt by everyone. “As we leave this truck with relief material, let us ask God to bless its journey and those who re ceive these items,” he said, urging more people to sup port flood victims. Shilshi said Goa had consistently responded to humanitarian crises, in cluding violence in Mani pur and floods in Kerala and other States. “This is just a symbolic donation going to Assam, but people have also provided finan cial help, which we have already sent,” he said, add ing that relief work began on August 1 and volunteers had been assisting affected people. Managing trustee Don ald Fernandes said the As sam situation was worse than generally understood and described the truck as Street Providence’s first major relief effort there.

He said financial assistance had already been sent, while ma terials were being procured and distributed locally. A Street Providence rep resentative will assess the situation in Assam, follow ing which the organisation plans to collect additional material and send a second truck to the affected areas.
