PORVORIM: Frequent quarrels between two siblings ended in tragedy when one sister allegedly stabbed the other to death in their house at Khorlim-Mapusa on Wednesday and later tried to commit suicide by jumping into a well.
This is the third murder to be reported in Bardez taluka within a week.
According to Mapusa police, the deceased, Anar Laximan Sawkar (54), employed as a stenographer at Goa University, was residing with her younger sister, Darshana (52), in their house at Khorlim.
Anar was a divorcee while Darshana is spinster and the two sisters would be frequently involved in quarrels, police said.
On Wednesday, their brothers, Dharesh and Mayur, who were residing elsewhere in the State, went to Khorlim to meet their sisters when they found the main door of the house locked from the inside.
They knocked and when they got no response, broke open the window and entered the house.
On noticing her brothers inside, Darshana jumped into a well by the side of their house in a bid to commit suicide. However, she caught hold of a rope and the brothers notified the fire services.
Fire fighters rescued Darshana from the well and she was shifted to the Mapusa District Hospital for medical treatment.
In the meanwhile, the two brothers began frantically searching for Anar and when their efforts failed, they lodged a missing complaint with the Mapusa police.
The two brothers returned to the house on Thursday at about 11 am and went to an unused toilet, where they were horrified to find the body of Anar covered under many clothes.
They notified Mapusa police of the incident and a police team found stab wounds on the face and neck of the deceased. The body was sent for an autopsy at the Goa Medical College Hospital at Bambolim.
Mapusa police have registered the case under Section 302, 201 IPC against Darshana and Mapusa PI Tushar Vernekar is investigating it under the supervision of Mapusa DySP Serafin Dias.
This is the third murder to be reported in Bardez taluka within a week, following the murder of Rekha Karath (19) of Sanquelim at the Assagao plateau on January 17 and the murder of a 50-year-old man at Dando-Siolim on January 20.
