Social Welfare Dept drags feet in releasing aid to applicants of Atal Asra schemes

Rachol Sarpanch takes up cases of tribal communities; says people rendered homeless still waiting for aid

MARGAO: Rachol Sarpanch and Congress ST leader Joseph Vaz, has raised alarm over the dire situation faced by applicants of the Atal Asra schemes in Goa. Vaz highlighted that numerous individuals from tribal communities are now grappling without a roof over their homes after their dwelling units collapsed during recent heavy rains.

The Sarpanch pointed out that a significant number of applications for financial assistance to repair and reconstruct houses under the Atal Asra schemes remain pending with Social Welfare Department. This delay, according to Vaz, has pushed many applicants into a “grave difficult situation.”

He argued that if the tribal and social welfare departments had processed these applications in a timely manner, many homes could have been saved from collapse during the ongoing monsoon.

Vaz emphasized that the Government still has an opportunity to mitigate this crisis and called for immediate action to expedite the clearance and sanctioning of pending applications, stating that this would provide much-needed relief to applicants and their families, potentially saving them from complete loss of their homes.

In a direct appeal to the Ministers of Tribal and Social Welfare departments, Vaz urged them to address this pressing issue without delay and stressed on the importance of not only sanctioning the pending applications but also ensuring the swift release of funds to the beneficiaries.
