PANJIM: The Save Old Goa Action Committee (SOGAC) on Friday said that they will not back out from their agitation until the illegal structure constructed in the heritage and protected area of Old Goa is razed to the ground.
They will carry forward their protest into the New Year too. This despite the fact that the Old Goa Panchayat had recently issued the revocation order for the licence of the construction project and had stated that the demolition process would be initiated soon.
“It has been eight days now that the licence revocation order has been out, but there has not been any action from the State government. We will not back out from our agitation until the structure is demolished,” said SOGAC Coordinator Peter Viegas.
He further said that the illegal construction in Old Goa and the people against it is just one example of people’s power winning over illegalities.
“There may be several such cases in Goa, and we don’t want to keep taking to the streets to have our demands fulfilled,” he said.
Over the past month, people from different parts of Goa have visited the citizens supported by the SOGAC who have continued their satyagraha near the illegal construction. There have also been demonstrations in various villages and towns across Goa to highlight this issue and call for the immediate demolition.
The SOGAC also claimed that there should be a master plan demarcating a buffer zone around heritage sites.
