MAPUSA: The local vendors in the Mapusa municipal market have complained that the “sopo” contractor is overcharging them.
The “sopo” amount is between Rs 10 and Rs 20 as per the space allotted, however, the contractor charges them Rs 50 and above, the vendors alleged.
“The ‘sopo’ charges are between Rs 10 and Rs 20, but the contractor is forcibly charges us Rs 50. We are forced to sit in dirty water, while the non-Goan vendors are given proper clean place. If they keep on charging us Rs 50 everyday then how are we suppose to survive,” a lady vendor asked.
Claiming that the “sopo” contractor writes on the receipt Rs 50 and without proper dates, the vendors alleged that the collector also mistreats and harasses them.
Meanwhile, Sudesh Tivrekar, a member of Mapusa People’s Union said,” We have already given written complaints regarding the harassment and overcharging by ‘sopo’ contractor with an demand that his contract should be revoked however till now no action is action.”
“’Sopo’ rate is as per the space allotted to the vendors. We are receiving complaints on different issues and we are trying to sort them. We will try to find solution to this. Also from last two months the municipality is facing loss due to lockdown, which cannot be recovered. We will try and solve the issue of fellow Goans,” said Ryan Braganza, Chairperson of Mapusa Municipal Council.
