MARGAO: During a meeting convened on Wednesday, the South Goa Zilla Panchayat tabled a proposal advocating for a significant increase in the honorarium for its members. The proposal aims to raise the current honorarium of Rs 15,000 to Rs 50,000 per month.
The demand for an increased honorarium reflects the recognition of the efforts and responsibilities shouldered by Zilla Panchayat members. The proposal highlights the importance of acknowledging the dedication and time commitment required for effective service in local governance.
Suvarna Tendulkar, Chairperson of South Goa ZP, addressed reporters and emphasised that ZP members have completed three years of service. “The honorarium of even panch members has been increased by the government. However, the similar demand of ZP members is yet to be taken into consideration. We expect, at least after the next Assembly session, that the government will give a green signal to our proposal and implement it at the earliest,” she stated.
The meeting also discussed other issues, including the recently cancelled meeting of the South Goa District Planning Committee, as well as concerns related to overflowing sewage and garbage.
