Split emerges within Congress in Goa

MARGAO: Requesting the Congress to put its house in order, Curtorim legislator Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco vowed to weed out tainted leaders from the party.
“The party will have to make some tough decisions to put their house, led by tainted leaders, in order. If they don’t, then perhaps we will have to take some decisions,” said Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, while commenting about the prevailing scenario in Goa Congress.
It may be recalled that Reginaldo had earlier expressed his frustration at the delays taken by Congress in the aftermath of ten of its former MLAs switching over to the BJP.
Now, as one of the five MLAs left, Reginaldo hinted that the party members are not happy with the way Congress has been functioning.
“I am beginning to doubt the integrity of the people who are at the helm of affairs, quipped Reginaldo, while adding that ‘backstabbers’ are running the party at the moment.
“There are allegations against the President (Girish Chodankar) and lots of them.  This puts the leadership in doubt in view of such cases. If the party has such kind of leadership, then where will my people go?” Reginaldo questioned.
He further added that he is looking after ‘his people’ and that he has kept a distance from the ‘tainted leadership. ’
“The youth is looking up to the party. I will strive and see that the party makes changes. We will see though what they do, added Reginaldo.
On a more despondent note however, Reginaldo said, “I am beginning to feel that they don’t require help and if that is the case, then God help them” warned Reginaldo.
He continued with his tirade against those currently at the helm of affairs and said ‘don’t expect anything from them.’  He clarified that Congress is a good party but that the problem lies with the ‘tainted leaders.’
When asked for clarity on what was the underlying message behind his statements and his future plans, Reginaldo replied saying, “ “It’s not the time to take a final call on the scene, but I look for changes as people of Goa are not happy with what is happening”.
When asked to comment about the past regarding the then merger of Save Goa Party with Congress, Reginaldo recalled that he was against the same at that point of time.
“I was against the merger.  I had told Churchill Alemao that I want to change Goa with a regional party. I had even asked him to leave me alone in the party as a regional outfit would be a force to reckon with in the future. But he did not do this and went ahead with merging the party, said Reginaldo.
