MANDUR: In a bid to promote agriculture in the khazan lands of Neura and Mandur, agricultural promotion meet was recently held for the farmers of neighbouring villages.
The highlight of the meeting was sharing of experience by Nester Rangel from St Estevam, who was instrumental in bringing fallow khazan lands back to cultivation. He insisted that paper work needs to fall in place before permission is sought for the cultivation.
Rangel said that labourers need to be arranged for this task as it will help in expediting the long-term mission. He said, “due to lack of man power, the need of mechanical labour has increased.”
“Motivation and passion will help various tasks to fall in place,” Rangel said and urged the elderly and the youth to take it as a mission.
He enlightened the farmers about the success story in St Estevam and the following project gaining momentum in St Cruz.
The member secretary of Goa Diversity Board, Dr Pradip Sarmokadam gave a presentation on mangroves and other plants nursery. Dr Suresh Kuncalikar, principal of Don Bosco Agricultural College, Sulcorna, Quepem, was the chief guest.
Dr Kuncalikar stressed the need to motivate the people in order to take up agriculture in the khazan lands, which existed during yester years. He also suggested nurseries could be started in schools and health centres. The principal said identification of land and formation of committee should be on priority basis.
He said farming in fields and fishing need to be cultivated together as they are interlinked.
Plant saplings were distributed to the participants. In the afternoon, power tiller was put into use in Dhamda khazan, thus starting an agricultural revolution after almost 20 years.
