PANJIM: In a bid to avoid flooding during the monsoon, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has undertaken de-weeding of the contaminated St Inez creek at an estimated cost of Rs 15 lakh. Dredging of the ancient creek will be undertaken after the rains.
CCP has roped in Kafmar Environmental Services LLP for the project. The corporation intends to sign a three-year contract with the company to ensure that weeds don’t grow in and alongside the creek.
Speaking to media persons, Panjim Mayor Surendra Furtado said the corporation is taking necessary precautions to avoid any flooding in the city. “The lack of flow of water of the creek has resulted in major flooding at Tonca-Caranzalem area in 2013. We want to avoid that situation,” he said.
“There won’t be major water logging problem at least towards Tonca-Caranzalem-St Inez areas, if the creek is cleared of all the dumps and weeds before the monsoon kicks off,” the Mayor said.
The de-weeding work that commenced from PWD sewerage plant at Tonca on Monday will continue till end of the creek at old GMC building.
Furtado said the project is being undertaken through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity. “We are now working on the estimate to sign a three-year agreement with the company to undertake de-weeding every time required,” he said.
