PANJIM: BJP President Sadanand Shet Tanavade on Thursday said the party has requested the government to defer the Act’s implementation considering that the people of Goa are already reeling under loss due to the pandemic.

“We have been discussing since last two days about the new MV Act after government decided to implement it. We have appealed the government – the Chief Minister and Transport Minister — not to implement the new rule at the moment. The hefty penalties are not in the reach of a common man and to bring road discipline, imposing fines is not the only way,” he said while addressing a press conference, on Thursday.

On April 5, the State government finally decided to implement the stringent law with effect from April 16, 2021 by notifying the Central Act. However, minutes later, the minister told the media that a corrigendum notification will be issued to commence the Act’s enforcement from May 1.

Reacting to the tie-up between Congress and Goa Forward Party in the ensuing elections to five municipalities, Tanavade alleged the move was due to fear of losing the elections.

“BJP will win in all the municipalities. The Chairperson and Vice Chairperson will be from BJP. Digambar Kamat and Vijai Sardesai have realised that Margao is going out of their hand which is why they have formed the alliance,” he said.

The State government, the BJP leader further said, will issue new stricter rules to bring down COVID-19 cases. The State is going through a tough situation as COVID-19 cases are rapidly increasing.
