PANJIM: Despite tall claims by Goa police, the crime graph in Goa has risen in 2014, with a total of 4,466 cases reported in the calendar year, registering a marginal 3.57 percent increase over 2013.
Though there has been a marginal increase in theft and auto-theft cases last year, robberies and burglaries have reduced. In 2013, 4,312 crimes were reported.
The State saw a slight drop in heinous crimes as 218 cases were reported in 2014, as against 222 reported in 2013, a decrease by 1.80 percent. The detection rate however fell by 0.69 percent to 86.70 percent, compared to 2013. There were 1,521 thefts and burglaries in 2014 as against 1,524 cases in 2013, which is a decrease of 0.20 percent. The detection rate has also been good as it increased by 10.84 percent than in the preceding year, the Deputy Inspector General of Police V Renganathan claimed.
He said Goa police’s target this year will be to encourage general public, particularly commercial establishments, to install safety measures.
“We have increased our resources… the staff has increased and as such crime in the last year was well under control. Our detection rate has also been impressive compared to 2013,” Renganathan told reporters at Goa Police’s annual press conference.
The department said while crime increased by 3.57 percent, detection of overall crimes also increased by 5.67 percent, with 70.58 percent crimes reported in 2014.
The DIG said the department would insist that people hire private security guards and install surveillance cameras as a preventive measure this year. Besides, their other thrust areas will be enhancing coastal security, effective anti narcotics measures and developing infrastructure for cyber crime cell.
Increase in No of fatal accidents
PANJIM: The State witnessed an increase in fatal accidents with 290 deaths, of which 131 deaths were due to non-use of helmets. According to the data released by the department on Thursday, 283 fatal accidents were reported in 2014 as compared to 249 cases in 2013, an increase of 13.65 percent.
DIG V Renganathan told reporters at Goa Police’s annual briefing that they would further strengthen their drive to create awareness among bikers and pillion riders to wear helmets. The grievous accidents also saw an increase of 5.09 percent with 268 cases reported in 2014, compared to 255 in 2013.

Outside traffic rose in Dec 2014
PANJIM: Goa police has estimated that a total of over one lakh non-Goan vehicles entered the State during the last 10 days of December 2014, of which majority were from Maharashtra and Karnataka. A total of 40,827 vehicles entered Goa, excluding Maharashtra and Karnataka registration from December 12 to December 31, 2014. “If we count MH and KA registration vehicles, the number of vehicles exceeded one-lakh mark,” the DIG said. Records further reveal that a total of over 10 lakh vehicles were registered up to March 31, 2014, which was 9.38 lakh approx till March 31, 2013.

Verification of persons
PANJIM: In view of the prevailing situation in the country and intelligence inputs regarding terrorist threats to the West Coast of India, the government has insisted on proper verification of persons staying in rental accommodation or in hotels, lodging and boarding, private guest houses or guest houses of religious bodies and paying guest accommodation.
North Goa District Magistrate has ordered that all the owners of residential accommodation, commercial houses, hotels/lodges and paying guests should verify the bonafides of persons through their proof of valid identity cards, and fill-in the tenant/visitor/guest verification forms. These should then be sent to police stations concerned for verification. This order will come into force with effect from Friday for a period of 60 days.
