State slowly emerging as COVID hotspot, records 582 new cases in 24 hours

Over 1100 new cases and four-related fatalities reported in last two days

PANJIM: COVID-19 cases are surging in Goa with over 1100 new cases and four-related fatalities reported in last 48 hours. A positivity rate of over 18 per cent, State on Thursday recorded 582 new cases, the highest for a single day. 

For the second consecutive day, the coastal State has recorded above 500 cases. On Wednesday, the single day record was of 527 new cases. 

After initial downward trend in the new infection since October, last year, the State, from mid March, is slowly emerging as a hotspot for coronavirus. The first eight days of April have recorded whopping 2,772 cases, which means on an average 346 new infections, per day.  The month has also reported 12 COVID-related fatalities while 985 patients have recovered. 

With this, State active case tally has jumped to 3,331, with commercial town Margao being the worst hit with 348 active patients, followed by the mini-town Porvorim with 326 cases and Capital City of Panjim with 291 active cases. 

The sub-district of Ponda also has reported 242 active cases while the coastal belt of Candolim has 240 patients in isolation. 

Mapusa (179), Vasco (170) and Cortalim (162) are also slowly adding up to the list of highest number of active cases. 

While on one side, the positivity rate is witnessing a rise, the recovery rate has fallen drastically from 98 per cent in January to 93.14 percent as on Thursday- the day that saw 107 patients being declared cured. 

As per the Health Bulletin issued, of the total 3206 samples tested, 582 have tested positive for the infection. Since January 29, till date, State has total 60,811 confirmed COVID-19 cases. A total of 56,638 patients have also recovered during the period, while 842, with co-morbid conditions, have lost their lives due to the deadly infection.
