Stop discriminatory rituals performed on widows, demand Keri locals

Valpoi: A group of locals have in a written appeal to the Keri panchayat demanded that some discriminatory rituals performed on widows after the death of their husbands be stopped immediately

“Breaking bangles, wiping out sindur etc are some of the rituals performed against a widow after her husband dies,” they said and and requested the civic body to stop such antiquated practices under the Section 14 of the IPC.

The appeal has been signed by several locals and the campaign to add more signatures is underway. “We have also written to the temple committees asking their views on the same. Changing some of these rituals with changing times is the need of the hour. So far we have received positive response from the locals,” said Madhavi Rane.
