Stray dogs menace in Sankhali village

Nine children were recently bitten by strays; dogs enter schools to steal students’ mid-day meals

The residents from Navelim village in Sankhali have complained of dog menace in the village and have urged the government to tackle the situation.The stray dogs are creating havoc in the village and also attacking small children thereby causing panic among the villagers. The menace has turned so bad that recently nine children were bitten by a stray dog.
“The number of stray dogs in the village is on the rise. They attack small children, this has created a panic in the area,” Narayan Gawas from Navelim told Herald.As per the information the dogs are found loitering in packs. They also run after the vehicles, especially during the night. “The dogs are become so bold that they enter the schools when the mid-day meal is supplied to the students and steal the bread. These dogs are not at all afraid of the small children who are vulnerable to these creatures,” he added.The dogs also create problem for the smooth vehicular movement. “At night, these dogs are seen sitting right in the middle of the road. This has increased two-wheeler accidents in the area,” Rajaram Gawas, a senior citizen from the village. “Because of these stray dogs the senior citizens are also afraid to sit in public places with the fear of getting bitten,” he added.
When the Navelim sarpanch, Dipesh Gauns, was contacted he accepted there is rise in stray dogs in the village.
