MARGAO: Some councillors of the Margao Municipal Council have now demanded that strict action be initiated against all the hoteliers and housing societies releasing sewage water into the nullahs that head towards the River Sal and contaminate the river and other water bodies.

Mahesh Amonkar, Kharebhand Councillor urged the civic body to crack the whip at the earliest against the wrongdoers. He has demanded that the MMC directs all  hoteliers and residential houses to take sewage connections and stop discharging sewage water into the nullahs and gutters.

A few days ago, Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas had raised this issue over the release of raw sewage water into the River Sal at different locations, including Sewage Treatment Plant at Sirvodem-Navelim. “It has been noticed that the river has been polluted due to sewage, as several hotels and residential complexes discharge their sewage water into the nullahs heading towards the river Sal. Even several houses and bungalows located on the edge of the river discharge the raw sewage directly into the river” said Amonkar.

He informed that the river water has now turned  black due to the release of sewage into it. “Once upon a time the River Sal was clean but today it is totally polluted,” he stated. Amonkar stated that the Margao Municipality needs to take up this issue seriously, as the sewage from the Margao and Fatorda is being discharged into the river.

“ I demand that the civic body and the Chairperson  take all erring hoteliers

and residential complexes to task.

The Margao Municipality can play a major role in stopping the release of

raw sewage into the river,” said Amonkar.
