PONDA: Goa Sugarcane Farmers Association that supply sugarcane to the government-run Sanjivani Sugar Factory in its meeting held on Tuesday, at the factory premises, decided to launch a morcha at Panjim on Friday afternoon in protest against government apathy towards their demands.
The morcha aims to address four key demands that have been pending for the past two years, despite government assurances.
According to President of the Farmers Association Rajendra Desai, they have been demanding a hike in rates of sugarcane supplied to sugar factory for the past two years, but government seems to have paid no heed.
According to him they are currently paid Rs 2500 per tonne for sugarcane and they have been demanding a hike of Rs 900 and want the figure changed to Rs 3400 per tonne.
The other demand of the association was to clear 80 per cent of bill amount of the sugarcane supplied to factory within fifteen days.
They also demanded appointment of administrator on sugar factory for a full term of five years and power supply free of cost for sugarcane production.
The association also demanded the waiver of loans taken by them.
