PANJIM: After playing hide and seek with the Goa Crime Branch for nearly 45 days, suspended head constable Vaman Naik, involved in the unholy police-prostitutes-pimp nexus was arrested at the premises of High Court of Bombay at Goa, Monday.
Naik surrendered before the Court after withdrawing his petition challenging the Additional Sessions Court’s order dismissing his advance bail plea on Dec 18, 2012.
In the petition to the High Court last week, Naik had pleaded for interim relief, but the matter was adjourned for Monday morning. When the matter came up for hearing, he submitted an application for withdrawing his plea and surrendered.
Inspector Sunita Sawant said the accused will be produced for remand on Tuesday. His identification is likely to be held during his custody.
Naik and two other suspended policemen ~ Santosh Vengurlekar and Vijay Gaikwad are being probed after two sex workers had told a panel under the sub divisional magistrate for the rehabilitation of rescued victims, that they were sexually abused by some policemen in return for protection of their soliciting business. They have been sent back to the native state of Jharkhand.
Pimp Anwar Shah, who allegedly has close contacts with the police, would supply girls to them. Mapusa, Calangute and Bicholim police stations have come under the scanner as the two rescued flesh trade victims were supplied to policemen posted at these police stations since 2010 until they were rescued in a raid at Calangute in October 2012.
An FIR was registered in November 2012 taking cognizance of a complaint filed by panel member Auda Veigas. One of the girls stated that she was an eyewitness to police sodomising a transgender in Calangute area.
