PANJIM: While Goa Police are improving conditions of Police Stations across the State, what they are unable to do is increase the staff strength, which is woefully short, and the gap between sanctioned staff and those available for duty keeps growing.
As per BPRD (Bureau of Police Research and Development) Goa Police has a sanctioned staff strength of about 6943 personnel but the available staff is 6151. Senior Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Vishram Borkar said the sanctioned strength is based on the residential population and does not take inot account the floating population of the State that is four times higher.
“Being a tourist State we need more hands to man the law and order situation. We are in the process of recruiting more personnel in the force, it will be done in phases,” SP Borkar said, adding that the police strength had last been revamped in 2005.
He said that the number of personnel required to manage the resident population and the tourists, is double the current sanctioned strength.
Agreeing, Deputy Superintendent of Police of Traffic Cell, Dharmesh Angle, said the current strength of his department is 1000 personnel, but he needs at least that many more.
“This strength includes home guards. We are short by at least 1000 personnel as per the ratio considering the population as well as vehicle numbers,” DySP Angle said. At present the state has approximately 20 lakh vehicles.
