Taleigao outpost not of much help to Panjim police

The commissioning of Taleigao outpost about 10 months ago has not been of great help to the Panjim police station that continues to get complaints of incidents reported in the jurisdiction of Taleigao.
The then chief minister and present defense minister of the country Manohar Parrikar had inaugurated the outpost, built at a cost of Rs 63 lakh approx, on December 3, 2014. Since then till date, the outpost – coming under Panjim PS – has registered 22 non-cognizable and 19 ‘other cases’ including gambling and accident-related offenses.
Panjim PI Siddhant Shirodkar concedes that people still prefer reporting cases to the PS than going to the outpost. “If there are small incidents like minor accidents or so, the citizens walk in to the outpost to report the matter. But for other offenses, they lodge their complaints at PS,” he said adding, “We then summon the concerned police official posted at outpost, brief him/her about the case and direct to register FIR or non-cognizable cases depending on the nature of the complaint.”
The BJP-led coalition had announced to convert the outpost to a full fledged PS but if the situation continues to remain like this, it would remain a distant dream. Nonetheless, for now, the outpost functions with the present staff strength.
