Goa seamen to hire maritime lawyer
MARGAO: Goa Seamen Association of India (GSA) has decided to hire in a Mumbai based maritime lawyer to fight legal matters. The senior lawyer will visit the GSAI office at Madel, Margao, on September 5 to address various issues of seafarers that need legal solutions. GSAI President Dixon Vaz has called upon seafarers to attend the meeting. Henceforth the maritime lawyer would be visiting every month, added Vaz.
St Barthlomew feast celebrated
MARGAO: The annual feast of St Barthlomew was celebrated on Sunday with pomp and gaiety at our Lady of Remedies Church, Betalbatim. The main celebrant for the high mass was Fr Keneth Telles, director of family Centre, Archidiose of Goa. In his homily, Fr Telles stressed on values of family life. The other co-celebrants were Fr Pascoal Afonso, parish priest of Betalbatim church and Fr Milagres Fernandes assistant parish priest of Betalbatim church.
Bajani Saptah starts at Bandora
PONDA: The traditional annual Shree Nagesh Maharudra Bhajani Saptah celebration commenced on Sunday in temple premises at Nageshim, Bandora by performing traditional rituals. The chain bhajan will then continue for the seven days by bhajani artists from all over Goa. A special attraction of decorated tableaux (pars), displaying mythological scenes, will be held during the celebration period. Thousands of devotees visit the deity Nagesh to seek blessings during the Sapthah period. The Sapthah will conclude on Sept 6 with a procession called Gopal Kala chanting the name of Krishna and breaking of Dahi Handi.
Dharna by ex-servicemen
PONDA: The Indian Ex-Servicemen League (Goa Branch) has organised a dharna at Azad Maidan, Panjim on September 2, at 9.30 am in support of the hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi by Indian ex-servicemen from all over country to press for One Rank One Pension. The dharna at Azad Maidan will be supported by all ex-serviceman associations in Goa.
Pandit Sawkar felicitated
BICHOLIM: The Samrat club of Bicholim recently felicitated drama actor and classical singer Pandit Prasad Sawkar for rendering invaluable services in the field of drama art. On this occasion, Pandit Sawakar narrated his career as an actor. Sawakar was felicitated by Samrat President Deepak Marathe.
Lobo calls for vocational training centre for special children
PORVORIM: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo stated that the state government should set up a vocational training centre for the special children to provide them skill based training to enable them to earn their livelihood and become economically independent. Charitable institutions and the like-minded people should get together and impress upon the government to set up a vocational training centre as early as possible, he said. The special children need encouragement and support both from the society and the government to stand on their own feet, Lobo said. He was speaking at Porvorim at the function organized by primary section (special children) of Chubby Cheeks Spring Valley High school to celebrate Raksha Bandan. Lobo further stated that despite the directives of the Supreme Court, the State government has not provided facilities like lifts, toilets etc in the government offices for the differently-abled. The government should think seriously about these people and provide necessary facilities in all government offices, Lobo said. Earlier, Headmistress Ms Selena D’Souza welcomed; Ms Priyanka Harmalker compered and Ms Angela Simoes thanked. On the occasion special children tied Rakhi to MLA Lobo. Later, the MLA distributed gifts to the special children.
