MARGAO: Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar has spilled the beans on the infrastructure development plans for the National Games 2016. The government will develop more than 10 sites across Goa into venues for games at a cost of Rs 285 crore.
The teams looking after the preparation of the event selected the venues four days ago after a feasibility study. Out of the Rs 285 crore that would be spent on developing the selected grounds, Rs 150 crore would be contributed by the Goa government.
“The cost can increase during the whole exercise, and so we will appoint a consultant by August. The consultant will submit the PMC and estimate, and the tender will be floated soon. The actual work is scheduled to begin by November or December,” said Tawadkar. He strongly believed that they would be ready for the National Games before schedule.
The Campal Indoor Stadium, to be refurbished at a cost of Rs 4 crore, would be used for boxing, fencing and table tennis. The Tourism Department space near Campal will be developed into a tennis court at a cost of Rs 12 crore.
The other venues are: Outdoor area of Campal (baseball, Rs 5 crore), Ponda Sports Complex (multipurpose, 15 crore), Margao Swimming Pool (swimming, Rs 30 crore), Chicalim Ground (multipurpose, Rs 10 crore), Poinguinim Ground (Archery and other events, Rs 20 crore), Navelim Ground (multipurpose, Rs 25 crore), Pernem Savalora Sports Complex (handball and kabaddi, Rs 20 crore), Peddem Stadium (hockey, Rs 20 crore)
