Taxi driver drowns after car plunges into river at Sarmanas

BICHOLIM: A 26-year-old taxi driver drowned as the car he was driving plunged into the river at Sarmanas ferry point at Bicholim on Tuesday evening.

The police identified the victim as Yatin Mayekar from Dabdaba, Bicholim.

The incident occurred when Mayekar was proceeding from Mayem to the Karmali railway station from Mayem residency to drop a family which included Amit Korgaonkar, his wife and their minor son from Mumbai.

When they reached near Sarmanas ferry point at Pilgao at about 6 pm, Mayekar lost control over the vehicle and car plunged into river Mandovi. However, before the car skidded and plunged into the river, Korgaonkar and his family managed to get out of the car.

Mayekar’s body was removed out of the vehicle with the help of locals and shifted to Community Health Centre (CHC), Bicholim, where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.

The Bicholim police conducted inquest panchnama and sent the body to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Bambolim for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered under Section  174 of CrPC and the same is being investigated by PSI Vikesh Hadfadkar under the guidance of Bicholim PI Rahul Naik.
