PANJIM: While non-governmental organisation (NGOs), traditional fishermen associations and activists have strongly voiced their opposition to the government’s plans to establish a Marina project as part of the Sagarmala initiative, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has said that it is better to have a marina project than to develop a port in the State.
Speaking at a programme organised to inaugurate the new Sant Andre panchayat ghar at Goa Velha, Sawant urged the people not to oppose projects unnecessarily and not to create any hindrance to development works.

“Development projects need to be supported. Youth of the State have gone abroad as they saw better opportunities there. Many youth are working on ships as they are paid well. If they are provided the same amount of salary then it is possible that they may be retained,” Sawant said.
Similar views were expressed by Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho, who was also present. “We need to support some projects,” Godinho said.
“I would like to tell those speaking about ports that even marinas are a type of port. And it is better than ports,” Godinho added.
Recently, the Goenchea Ramponkarancho Ekvott (GRE), traditional fishermen associations and activists had strongly voiced their opposition to the government’s plans to establish a Marina project at Nauxim as part of the Sagarmala initiative. The project envisages a facility to accommodate 239 boats with space to accommodate two larger 50-metre yachts.
