PANJIM: Traffic along the highway at Cortalim was disrupted on Wednesday for more than five hours after a goods carrier tempo turned turtle near Agassaim Police Station.
The vehicle was proceeding from Vasco to Panjim when at around 11.30 am it dashed against a pole and turned over virtually disrupting traffic for an unprecedented five hours.
While Agassaim police officials say that the vehicle was cleared off the road by using crane, the entire exercise, according to commuters seems to have lasted for close to four hours. This created chaos ahead of the Zuari Bridge (police station side) and caused traffic jams from noon till 5 pm.
Traffic along the routes to Panjim, Sancoale, Vasco and Verna came to a standstill and police seemed helpless in clearing the congestion.
This is not the first time that the National Highway 17 at Cortalim has witnessed such chaotic scenes.
During the last three months, at least three incidents on either side of the Zuari bridge blocked traffic for hours.
