MARGAO: Tensions escalated in Curtorim on Tuesday when residents discovered work being conducted to install power supply for a mobile network tower, despite strong opposition from villagers. Concerned locals are now demanding that the Curtorim village panchayat issue a show-cause notice to the agency responsible for continuing the work against the villagers’ wishes.
According to the villagers, the company in question had already erected a mobile network tower in Kovatem-Curtorim, and on Tuesday, further activities related to powering the tower were observed. In response, locals gathered at the site and voiced their objections.
Anthony Piexeto, a local resident, highlighted that a resolution opposing the mobile network tower had been passed during a previous Curtorim village panchayat gram sabha meeting. However, the issue has yet to be resolved.
After a lengthy standoff with company representatives, who had arrived at the site with police protection, villagers succeeded in halting the work.
The issue of mobile network towers has been a long-standing concern in Curtorim. Villagers have expressed their frustration in the past when they discovered a telecom company’s attempts to erect towers in residential localities and schoolyards, despite strong opposition.On Tuesday, several local leaders joined the villagers at the site to voice their anger.
