Thousands throng Margao church for feast of Pentecost

MARGAO: The feast of Pentecost or Holy Spirit was celebrated at Margao with great fervor with thousands of devotees thronging the Holy Spirit church at Old Market where a special pandal was erected in the church porch to protect the devotees from nature.

Rachol Seminary Rector Fr Aleixo Menezes celebrated the feast mass and delivered a touching sermon on the blessings of the Holy Spirit upon humans and that is why the human body becomes a temple of Holy Spirit. He urged the faithful to use the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit to bear witness to Jesus Christ.
As it is called the “purmentachem fest” meaning a feast where one can get the provisions for the oncoming monsoons, a huge fair has been set up in old market where people can purchase all kinds of things.
The entire SGPDA grounds has been occupied by traders selling all kinds of things ranging from clothes to plastic ware, granite items and even aluminum household items. Half of the SGPDA ground is occupied by carpenters selling all kinds of furniture items.
The road leading to Colva is occupied by vendors selling sweets related to feasts like kadeo bodeo, ladoos, halwa, revdeos and even grams and peanuts.
The Margao Municipal Council garage has been totally occupied by fisher folks selling all types of dry fish like shrimps, prawns, shell fish, Bombay ducks and ray fish. In earlier times people used to buy the dry fish to help them tide over the monsoons when there used to be no fresh available.
