VASCO: Having to depend on water supply from a distant location in Selaulim, Mormugao taluka invariably falls prey to one of the three stumbling blocks: reckless damage to the water pipeline, topographic factors and power failure.
The first of these three factors left residents of
a) Reckless damage to pipeline: Merces Vaddem was without water supply for nearly 15 days. Mindless digging to lay an underground electricity cable ruptured the PWD pipeline,
b) Torturous topography The uneven topography of Mormugao Taluka has also made it challenging to supply water from Selaulim to the remote corners of the taluka.
“Pressure drops as the water from Selaulim reaches the further corners of Vasco and Mormugao. To address this issue, a booster pump has been fitted to the main pipeline near Desterro and residents of Sada-Vasco get water supply for at least 4-5 hours every day,” the official added.
PWD (Vasco) Assistant Engineer Vishwambhar Bhende admitted that various factors have made it difficult to ensure uninterrupted water supply to Mormugao taluka.
“Even if there is a power failure for only one minute at the Selaulim Dam, it takes atleast 45 minutes to restart the motors/pumps and this, in turn, affects water supply to Vasco,” he said.
