PANJIM: Janu Rosario was elected the new sarpanch of Taleigao and Estella D’souza was elected as deputy sarpanch for five year term.
Both belong to the St Cruz MLA Atanasio Monserrate panel that swept the April 27 panchayat elections by decimating the BJP backed panel 10:1.
Speaking to media persons later, Monserrate accused the BJP led government for ignoring the garbage menace that is haunting Panjim and Taleigao.
The St Cruz MLA appealed to Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to hold a joint meeting in resolving the contentious issue.
“Chief Minister has been ignoring the garbage problem in Panjim and Taleigao. There is need to have a collective solution to the issue. I appeal to the Chief Minister to have joint meeting to resolve the issue,” he said.
Newly appointed aarpanch said that garbage is the major problem faced by the people of Taleigao. He also said that the issue will be discussed with Chief Minister.
Certain quarters feel that there was a quid pro quo between Monserrate and the chief minister in the clean sweep in the panchayat polls, since the BJP was ruling and could have weighed heavily on Monserrate panel’s chances.
