PANJIM: In what could be termed as a tit for tat to the government, the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) is now contemplating collecting House Tax from the government offices and government quarters.
CCP Mayor Uday Madkaikar said there are several government offices in the City which are not paying any tax.
“Government offices are not paying any taxes even as we are collecting their garbage. The government quarters are also not paying any House Tax,” he lamented.
Madkaikar said on Monday he would take up the issue at the council meeting.
“We have a meeting on Monday and I will present my strong view that we should collect House Tax from all government offices and quarters,” he said.
Referring to power disconnection by the Electricity Department to Panjim Market Complex, he said, “Just like how Electricity Department and Water Department is giving us bills, similarly we must also charge them House Tax for our service.”
The mayor said he would also enquire into why the tax was not collected earlier.
“I will also find out why this was not done earlier,” he said. Asked whether this move is in retaliation of power disconnection, he replied in a negative.
“It is not because of power disconnection but it is question of our revenue. We are losing revenue in lakhs of rupees per year due to this,” he said.
