MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council member Florence Tito Cardozo has denied allegations of Fatorda Block Congress president that the local MLA Vijai Sardesai neglected the ST community in Fatorda
To prove his point, Cardozo, who represents Ward 8, said that for first time in the municipal history, four ST candidates were elected as councillors from Fatorda, despite the area having only two reserved seats for them.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, Cardozo claimed that the four ST councillors from Fatorda Forward is testimony of the MLA’s commitment to the community..
Ward 5 Councillor Peter Fernandes said that the MLA has also firmly stood behind the farming community in Fatorda which predominantly comprises of tribals.
Fernandes said that all agricultural and allied activities in Fatorda were fully sponsored by the MLA — right from seeds, sowing, fertilizers, machinery and harvesting.
Recently a ‘Farmers Market’ was also opened by Sardesai which was exclusively for farmers from Fatorda to help market their produce which was cultivated locally, Fernandes added.
Ward 7 Councillor Jose Fernandes ridiculed the Congress ST convener for saying that the local MLA had done nothing in terms of jobs for the ST community.
“It is a given that government jobs is usually a prerogative of the government and it is the BJP government that has failed miserably at this,” he explained.
He also accused the past Congress government of failing to provide jobs to the ST community.
