CALANGUTE: Ignoring warning signs, tourists visiting the picturesque Fort Aguada at Sinquerim have been risking their lives to take selfies, photos and videos by climbing the sea wall and jumping around in the pouring rain.
The lifeguards agency had issued an advisory last month warning beach goers to stay away from rocky areas and cliffs along the coastline.
“It has been observed that a number of visitors to the beach are scaling rocky area and cliff tops in an attempt to get photographs to share on their social media profiles. Many of the images and videos posted online are located at extremely dangerous locations amidst steep rocks with jagged edges, areas with loose rocks and locations prone to rip currents and fierce waves. This poses a serious threat to visitors,” the lifeguards’ agency said in a statement.
However, locals in Sinquerim said that many tourists are in no mood to listen. “Tourists who come here don’t know that this is a dangerous spot and it’s risky. They don’t know that people have died here while taking selfies. In their overenthusiasm they climb, jump and do whatever they want,” a villager told O Heraldo, on Friday.
Three tourists had drowned in the monsoon last year while taking photos in the same area.
