Tourists obey police diktat on beach attire, no drinking

CALANGUTE: Sustained efforts by the India Reserve Battalion personnel manning the Calangute Beach Promenade over the past few days have yielded some results in preventing tourists from taking bottles/cans on the beach and swimming in their underwear.

The police have, however, admitted that their exercise would have been far more potent had they been equipped with challan books or warning signs on the beach.
The police team has been cautioning the tourists against carrying bottles/cans on the beach and is also advising male tourists to refrain from swimming in their underwear. The tourists seem to have got the message and many have started walking on the sands in proper attire.
Besides, the tourists have begun obeying the police team’s diktat ‘No-drinking on the beach’ and have stopped carrying glass bottles. They have been discarding glass bottles and cans in garbage bins provided by the Goa Tourism.
When contacted, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo expressed happiness that the Police have begun advising tourists to bathe in appropriate attire.
“I will meet Chief Minister on the issue and will press for strict implementation of the rules. Since the challan books are not provided to the police, they cannot penalise any offenders causing a nuisance on the beach. The challan books could come handy to implement the rules and stop tourists from creating nuisance like littering or drinking on beaches,” said Lobo.
