PORVORIM/PONDA: Butchers and meat traders in the State have reacted with alarm over a temporary halt in the slaughter of cattle at the Goa Meat Complex.
Kureshi Meat Traders Association of Goa President Anwar Ismail Bepari stated that the temporarily stoppage of cattle slaughtering at Goa Meat Complex would severely hamper their business activities.
“We are doing business legally by following all required formalities. In the first place, animals are not available in Goa due to which we have to import them from neighbouring states,” Bepari said.
“The State government has imposed entry tax on outstation vehicles entering Goa and this has affected vegetable supplies in the State. And now, a temporary halt in the slaughter of cattle at the Goa Meat Complex will make the situation worse for us. We will have to stop business activities till the matter is decided,” he added.
Meat traders in Ponda are also worried that the stoppage of cattle slaughtering will ruin their business.
“We are against illegal slaughtering of animals, but the government-approved slaughter house has to be continued. There are numerous meat consumers in the State and hundreds of families are dependent on this business,” said a meat trader from Ponda.
