Traders demand pay parking around Margao market

Most public parking space occupied by commercial buildings; vehicles parked from morning to evening; MMC to discuss traffic dept proposal

MARGAO: Traders of Margao’s congested New Market have made a forceful plea to the Margao Municipality and traffic officials to forthwith introduce pay parking in and around the market area.
Margao Municipal and traffic officials along with traders inspected the market area on Wednesday evening, as traders cried foul over the encroachment of parking spaces by commercial buildings around the market area.
President of the New Market Traders Association Vinod Shirodkar said that pay parking would bring about discipline in the market area, with every inch of open space utilised for vehicular parking. “Shop owners and employees of adjoining commercial buildings eat into the market parking space by parking their vehicles from morning to evening. We are confident that pay parking would create additional space for vehicles in the new market. We do not mind if the traders have to pay for parking,” he said.
When contacted, MMC Vice-Chairperson and market committee Chairman Dadi Mayenkar said the proposal for pay parking in the New Market area will be placed before the council meeting scheduled next week. “Though the pay parking proposal is not mentioned on the meeting agenda, the proposal received from the traffic department can be discussed in any other business,” Dadi said.
MMC Chief Officer Narayan Sawant said that the request of the new market traders for pay parking will be discussed at the coming meeting of the council. “We will prepare a draft proposal and place it before the council meeting for suggestions from the City Fathers,” he added.
