PONDA: The diversion of traffic from the main road at Curti-Khandepar to the internal roads in Ponda town on account of the reconstruction work of the main Portuguese-era culvert at Mestawada has resulted in chaos and confusion among commuters.
It is pertinent to note that the road Curti-Khandepar to Ponda town has been closed for traffic since October 1 for reconstructing the main culvert. On account of this work the traffic has been diverted via the internal roads in Curti. To add to the commuters’ woes, these roads are narrow and ridden with potholes due to ongoing sewerage work.
The residents complained that there are several internal roads leading to residential areas and commuters especially tourists travelling along these roads often get confused further leading to chaos.
These tourists stop their vehicles along the road near Hegdewar High School and often seek route directions from the locals.
A commuter Rocky Dias said there is no proper planning with regards to diversion of traffic. Signboards need to be installed at every nook and corner to avoid chaos and accidents and to ensure the smooth flow of traffic movement towards Curti- Khandepar.
He suggested declaring the internal roads as one-way. There are several internal roads leading to residential areas where commuters get confused. The sewerage chambers constructed above the road level pose risk to motorists especially riders. The locals complained that the heavy vehicles plying along the internal roads had recently damaged the main pipeline at Curti.
