Transport Dept proposes rotation transfer policy for its officers

PANJIM: In the wake of the recent arrest of two RTO officers caught accepting a bribe, the Transport Department is proposing a rotation transfer policy for its officers who have served many years in the same place.

The move aims at curbing the increasing corruption in the RTO offices.
Speaking to media persons, Transport Director Arun Desai said the department has decided to propose a rotation transfer policy for its officers, right from the rank of assistant director to motor inspectors, who are posted at the same place for many years without being transferred. “We would be writing to the government in this regard, wherein government would be asked to fix a particular year after which it would be mandatory to transfer the officers,” he said.
Desai said that such stringent measures are required to ensure corruption doesn’t take place. “I have also issued directions to all RTO officers, assistant directors, to keep a strong vigil on corrupt practices and ensure action is initiated wherever required,” he said.
Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) sleuths had arrested Transport Department Assistant Director Uday Gauns and Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector Vaman Umbrascar while accepting Rs 90,000 as a bribe on Tuesday. Both the officers stand suspended.
Gawas and Umbarscar were remanded to two days police custody with the local court extending their remand period by an additional three days. Their residencies and offices were searched by the investigating team for collecting further evidence.
The Transport and Vigilance Departments have begun independent disciplinary proceedings against the duo.
