Transport dept to increase fines

The transport department’s plans to increase the fines manifold to create fear against traffic violators, will be implemented in next two months, department official said.
Director of Transport, Swapnil Naik said that the basic idea behind increasing the fines is to create fear amongst the people, who often break the traffic rules.
“People are ready to pay Rs 100 to Rs 200 as fines for violating traffic rules. An increase in fines will discourage people from breaking rules,” Naik said.
As per the proposal, the people moving without helmets or over speeding will be fined Rs 500 as against Rs 100 earlier.
Similarly, the vehicles carrying excess load will be fined Rs 5000 and if overloaded by more then a tone, additional fine of Rs 1000 per excess tones will be charged. Earlier, the vehicles with overload where fined Rs 2000 each.
Naik said that the department has already received government approval over the project and it will be now forwarded for vetting.
Naik also said that for serious offences, the driving licenses would be suspended for six months.
“This will help in controlling the increasing accident rates in the city,” he stated.
The department is also planning to set up a Road Safety Board for the state.
