Trawlers demand Govt. to restart VAT-based diesel subsidy

Fishing ban ends, fishing season starts from Thursday

PANJIM  :Trawlers and other small
fishing boat owners have demanded the government to re-start the VAT-based
diesel subsidy. They highlighted that due to the stoppage of the subsidy many trawler
owners have suffered losses. They urged that if the subsidy is revived then it
will help the trawlers and other small boat owners to reduce the cost of the
diesel.

 The fishermen have also expressed
their frustration over the lack of repairs
done the Malim Jetty. They stated
that for the past six years no action has been taken to renovate the Jetty
which has created a problem
to the fishermen in loading and unloading the fish
from the boats.

Meanwhile,  trawlers owners have re-started fishing
on Thursday after Goa’s fishing ban was lifted on July 31st. Fishermen across
the state are hopeful for a good season this year, especially after facing
losses last year. However, bad weather and the unavailability of crew members
have dampened the spirits of trawler owners, posing challenges for a successful
start to the fishing season.
