Treatment plant will solve spring contamination at Calangute: Lobo

CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo stated that the work on the proposed garbage treatment plant at Calangute plateau is going on, despite objections from Saligao Consumer Forum (SCF).

Addressing media persons in his office at Calangute, Lobo said the SCF has approached the National Green Tribunal (NGT) opposing setting up of garbage treatment plant at Calangute plateau, citing contamination of Salmona Spring at Saligao due to dumping of garbage atop the hill by Calangute Panchayat.
“Contamination could have been possible due to seepage of sludge, as garbage was being dumped atop the hill without any treatment. Setting up of garbage treatment plant will address the issue of contamination of ground water and Salmona Spring. The plant will also generate electricity, which will be used to run the plant besides producing manure,” said Lobo.
Meanwhile, construction work of the garbage treatment plant is underway at Calangute plateau. The foundation work is going on at fast pace, while fencing of the acquired portion of land is also completed.
