CALANGUTE: Three persons, including two women and a man, were arrested by Calangute police on Monday for allegedly extorting money from a Gujarat resident by filing a false rape complaint.
Calangute police said Kiran Patel, a native of Gujarat, had lodged a complaint that two women, also from Gujarat, residing in Goa, had developed a friendship with him with the intention to put the complainant under the threat of registering false complaint of rape against him for the purpose of extortion and in furtherance the accused with their common intention extorted Rs two lakh by putting the complainant under the threat of dire consequences.
Following investigations, Calangute police have arrested the two accused women. The two later disclosed the name of another accused, Vishwadeep Gohil, also a native of Gujarat, who has also been arrested. All three are in police custody.
Explaining the modus operandi of the three, senior police officials said during the course of investigation it is learnt that the accused involved in the crime have filed complaints of rape at various police stations in Goa as well as in Gujarat with the intention to extort money.
As of now there is one case filed at the Colvale police station and the other at Calangute.
Police sources stated while in some cases one woman would act as a victim and the other would stand as a witness and vice versa. The man who was their partner in crime would lure men to befriend the duo.
The details of these cases are being obtained from the concerned police stations and further investigation is in progress. The accused were traced and apprehended through team work by staff of Calangute and Colvale police stations under the supervision of SDPO Porvorim Vishwesh Karpe.
