PANJIM/PORVORIM/TIVIM: Accidents along the NH 17 on the Margao-Panjim-Mapusa stretch led to severe traffic jams Wednesday after accidents forced vehicles and commuters to endure the snarls till the obstructions were cleared.
An accident at Goa Velha at around 2.30 pm on Wednesday caused a major traffic jam on NH17 on the Margao -Panjim route.
Traffic was blocked for more than an hour with vehicle queues stretching right from Siridao to Agassaim.
Reports from Agassaim police station stated that two vehicles were involved in the accident. A tempo carrying frozen fish rammed into a decommissioned electricity transformer which blocked the route until a crane was called in to tow the vehicle. A case of rash and negligent driving.
The accident took place on the narrow stretch of the Highway just after the Siridao bridge thereby virtually blocking the entire route including the Agassaim by-pass.
Meanwhile, traffic was disrupted along the panjim-Mapusa route for nearly 4 hours, after two tyres of a loaded truck burst near the Secretariat at Porvorim on Wednesday morning at about 9 am. Porvorim PI S Vaigankar and Traffic Inspector Rahul Parab rushed to the spot and towed the vehicle.
Since the truck was loaded, it took considerable time for the police to tow the vehicle. There was a long queue of vehicles reaching up-to O’Coqueiro junction. Some office goers reached late to work.
Meanwhile, large goods carrying vehicles were not allowed to proceed further from Karaswada till Guirim.
