Emboldened by Herald report on rampant illegal sand mining villagers approached Pernem Police

PERNEM: The residents of Ugvem, headed by former Sarpanch, on Tuesday, filed complaint to the Pernem police against the illegal mining in Tiracol River.

Locals on the complaint stated that the High Court had ordered the State Government to consider taking more stringent measures to ensure that no illegal sand extraction or transportation of sand takes place in the state of Goa.

Villagers further highlighted the incident that occurred on intervening night Sunday and Monday, where they spotted about 50-60 canoes engaged in sand mining in Tiracol River in jurisdiction of Ugvem village. Yet the police did not heed their call.

Villagers also stated that if police do not stop the sand mining activities then villagers will be compelled to approach the Court of law since constant extraction of sand will further lead to destruction/theft and also the peace and tranquillity in the village and in order to prevent the extensive loss to the plantations and agricultural fields of Ugvem village and safeguard the fundamental rights of poor farmers and the villagers.
