Ukraine has officially legalized the use of cannabis for medical, industrial, and research purposes in a significant move by the country’s Parliament. The law, approved with 248 votes in favor, aims to regulate the use of medical cannabis while keeping recreational cannabis illegal. The decision comes amid Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia, where the impact on the population, including soldiers and civilians facing Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), has prompted the government to explore medical cannabis as a treatment option.
The legislation ensures strict regulation of the entire medical cannabis supply chain, from production to distribution. Only licensed entities with a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certificate will be allowed to produce cannabis-based medicines, and the process will be closely monitored through 24/7 video surveillance. Electronic prescriptions tailored to individual patient needs will be required for medical cannabis products. The goal is to broaden patient access to these treatments, particularly for conditions intensified by the mental health impact of the conflict. The law is set to be implemented 6 months after its enactment, presenting potential business opportunities and signaling Ukraine’s commitment to health and wellness amid rebuilding efforts.
