Squad files police complaint

PONDA: Efforts by butchers in the State to have slaughtering of animals resumed at the Goa Meat Complex (GMC) received another setback, when the Animal Rescue Squad filed a police complaint claiming that underage cattle were illegally being slaughtered at the GMC.
“The storage yard of the GMC, where the skeletal remains of slaughtered animals are dumped, has skulls that look to be that of underage cattle. This is concrete evidence and to ascertain this, the police needs to send this sample to the forensic laboratory. The skulls of adult cattle are usually big, whereas we have found several small skulls at the dumping ground,” informed ARS President Amrut Singh.
“Cattle were also slaughtered in the open space in the GMC, instead of the specially designed plant worth crores of rupees. Workers who slaughtered the cattle outside the plant have admitted this to us.”
“Even the evidence of cattle being slaughtered a few meters away from the GMC is clearly visible at the site. A rope was found tied to a tree and to the other end of the rope was the leg of one animal. The animal’s skull is also at the site,” Singh added.
Singh stated that the police are yet to register the complaint. When contacted, Ponda police said they are already investigating a similar case and if necessary, would register the complaint filed by the ARS after investigating their complaint.
