MARGAO: At long last, underground power cabling will become a reality along Salcete’s coastal belt, where coconut trees play havoc with overhead lines during the monsoons.
Thanks to Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva’s initiative to replace the ageing high tension conductors with underground cabling, the government has launched an ambitious plan to cover Salcete’s coast line with underground cabling project.
Work on the Rs 83 crore project has begun at the sub-station at Carmona and all the villages in Benaulim constituency represented by Caitu Silva will be connected to the underground line by the year end. The Benaulim MLA said the underground cabling project has been a long pending dream of the people inhabiting the coastal villages of Benaulim constituency. “The 11KV high tension line is being laid underground, beginning with Carmona. The project will cover the remaining villages, including Cavelossim, Orlim, Varca and Benaulim one by one. I expect work on the project to end by December this year,” he said.
Replying to a question, Caitu said he has taken up the work of underground cabling on topmost priority given the hardships the people of Benaulim constituency had to undergo during monsoons. ‘Once the entire 11 KV line is laid underground, power disruptions due to tree fall will be reduced drastically, giving relief to the people,” he said.
To another question, he said the question of covering the village with low tension underground line will be taken up once the 11 KV line is successfully laid and tested.
